Youngs Crossing Park | Petrie

hero code

Youngs Crossing Park is situated off Youngs Crossing Road on a grassy bank of the North Pine River. Inland from the river mouth, the area at Youngs Crossing Park is mostly fresh water and is a popular fishing and kayaking destination in the Moreton Bay Region. With Old Petrie Town, Sunday markets and the Pine Rivers Heritage Museum right next door, Youngs Crossing Park and its surrounds make for a great Petrie day trip with the family.

Youngs Crossing Park

Popular for many years, Young Crossing Park has long been a go-to hotspot for kayaking, canoeing and, of course, fishing. On the banks of the North Pine River, Youngs Crossing is a majority freshwater fishing area (though can become brackish) where you may catch estuary species such as:

  • Bass
  • Bream
  • Cod
  • Flathead
  • Jewfish
  • Mangrove Jacks
  • Mud crabs and prawns
  • Mullet
  • Tailor
  • Trevally
  • Whiting

Be sure to check the dam release times as this may affect the flow of the stream. In the last few years, bull sharks have been occasionally spotted in the North Pine River around Youngs Crossing Park.

There is a small carpark on-site and toilet facilities.

Cycling

From Youngs Crossing Park, you have the opportunity to get out and explore more of the region via the walkway that leads to Wyllie Park, near Petrie Train Station. Once you reach there, you may even decide to continue along the Petrie to Kippa-Ring Shared Pathway that leads from Petrie Station out to Kippa-Ring Train Station. With almost 40 connections from the pathway, you have the option to veer off-track to other destinations.

North Pine River

Stretching approximately 54 kilometres from Mount Mee Forest in D’Aguilar National Park to the Moreton Bay, the North Pine River has many parks and reserves based along its stream. Winding its way through the greater part of the Moreton Bay Region, the North Pine River is dammed to form the North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale) then continues to join the South Pine River and flows out into Bramble Bay.

North Pine Country Park

The North Pine Country Park on Youngs Crossing Road is home to the Pine Rivers Riding for the Disabled as well as the Pine Rivers Pony Club. Based at the rear of Old Petrie Town, the park boasts a large grass field that is often used as a sporting ground.

Old Petrie Town

One of the most popular attractions that draw people toward Youngs Crossing is Old Petrie Town. Set among a beautiful backdrop of Moreton Bay fig trees, Old Petrie Town plays host to Sunday markets from 8 am – 2 pm each week. Given it’s rustic and natural beauty, it is also a popular wedding venue.

Among the heritage listed buildings within Old Petrie Town, you can find a restaurant, bar and a pub along with the Pine River Heritage Museum, perfect for planning a day trip to Petrie. The Pine Rivers Heritage Museum is free to enter and includes exhibits such as Yebri House, a restored workers cottage from the 1880s and all kinds of memorabilia. If you’re bringing the kids along, they will surely get immersed in the theatrette experiences and enjoy investigating the Old School Room – an authentic classroom setting from the mid-1900s.

Youngs Crossing Park and the surrounds are ideal for a day trip of family exploration, history lessons, market shopping and fishing.
