Within walking distance of Samford Village and only 30 minutes from Brisbane city lies a 5,000sqm block of land called Millen Farm. Founded, established and managed by the community, for the community, Millen Farm has a strong focus on creating a sustainable, alternative food system.
Millen Farm is owned and operated by local, Arran Heidemann. Taught to compost by his grandmother at a young age, Arran grew up with a love for growing plants and a talent for all things natural. After working for years on building sites and recognising the large amount of waste, Arran decided to sign up for a permaculture design certificate with world renowned Permaculture consultant, designer and teacher, Geoff Lawton. After obtaining his certificate from Zaytuna Farm: Home of the Parmaculture Research Institute, Arran started his own permaculture market garden before becoming the first Millen Farm farmer.
Although a not-for-profit business, Millen Farm operates as a commercial farm with the aim to maximise underutilised private and public land to establish a financially and ecologically sustainable urban farming system near Brisbane.
Millen Farm also produce a range of local, organic, seasonal produce that is available for purchase at the weekly Real Farmers’ Market held on site or via a box subscription service managed by the Farmer. The farm also aims to raise awareness of current food production systems, food transportation and nutrition.
