Kallangur Water Tower

The Kallangur Water Tower located in Curruthers Park on Narangba Road has received a colourful facelift thanks to Unitywater and the team from Brightsiders and Jugglers Artspace

In recent months, the once plain walls of the 33-metre tower have been transformed with a vibrant artwork titled ‘Symbiosis’ featuring native grass trees and a soaring black cockatoo.

The new artwork on the Kallangur Water Tower depicts plants and animals unique to Moreton Bay Region.

About the Unity Water Project

The installation is the result of a community engagement program, in which Unitywater invited local residents and business operators to guide the design development and ultimately choose the final artwork to be painted.

Over a period of six months, community members, artists and Unitywater collaborated to create three designs that reflected the history, identity and future of the region.

The three designs each told a unique story of the local area developed in response to resident’s most popular themes of ANZAC; wildlife, trees and nature; and the area’s past, present and future.

The final artwork was selected through a community selection process that attracted more than 1150 votes, meeting the project’s objective to create an artwork chosen by those that will live and work alongside it.

More than just a coat of paint

The Unitywater asset murals are part of a growing global trend to create large-scale public artworks that work to brighten daily life and enhance the appearance of otherwise dull concrete structures.

Unitywaters’ artworks aim to provide lasting benefits to community, beyond the installation itself, to support live and work alongside the site. As part of the Kallangur Water Tower installation project, Unitwyater facilitated a youth mentoring art program with students of nearby Dakabin High School.

The six-week program encouraged students to apply the principles of public art at their school by creating a mural on a school building, while also encouraging students to explore positive social pathways through art.
