Looking for what’s on for families and fun things to do in and around Strathpine? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

The Moreton Bay Region area of Strathpine is the heart of the former ‘Pine Rivers’ region, it includes the suburbs of Bray Park, Brendale, Cashmere, Joyner, Warner and Lawnton, and has everything families need to live and play in one central place.

The precinct straddles the divide between urban and country living, juxtaposing natural escapes with brick and mortar shopping hubs, dining establishments, and entertainment venues, allowing locals and visitors to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The eclectic mix of things to do in Strathpine ranges from big screen movies, play centres, and ten pin bowling to lakes, rivers, parks and playgrounds, making the Strathpine area perfect for an affordable and convenient family day out.

Nearby Nature Escapes

You can take the family boating, fishing, kayaking/canoeing, SUPing, or animal spotting in the rivers and lakes, or catch some fresh air and sun in the local parks and playgrounds.

South and North Pine River

The narrow South Pine River branches off from North Pine River, marking the border between Strathpine and Bald Hills.

The tidal mangrove area of South Pine River is great for a spot of fishing, or kayaking/canoeing, or SUPing exploring side creeks. You can launch into the water from the Bald Hills side at Barungwarra Bushland Reserve. To access the reserve’s boat ramp follow Bald Hills Road as far as Attunga Street on the left, then turn right at the boat ramp sign.

The last upstream access point is from the small boat ramp at Bob Bell Park in Strathpine, via Learmonth Street.

On rare occasions platypus can be spotted in North Pine River, so for a game of ‘I Spy Platypi’ while fishing, SUPing or kayaking/canoeing launch into North Pine River instead. You’ll find the nearest boat ramp at Deep Water Bend Reserve (part of Tinchi Tamba Wetlands Reserve), accessible from Wyampa Rd, Bald Hills.

There’s more places to spot animals in Moreton Bay Region nearby, so if the kids are keen why not pop over to Petrie’s Mungarra Reserve, a short drive from Strathpine, to go koala spotting with the kids.

Sweeney Reserve

For more outdoor things to do in Strathpine area pop across the North Pine River to the Petrie side for a stroll through Sweeney Reserve.

This wonderful dog-friendly nature escape hugs the river, adjoining Mungarra Reserve to the west. You can take the family on an expedition discovering parts of the North Pine Heritage Trail, or bring your furry four legged family member for some playtime.

You’ll find a few spots where you can slip a kayak/canoe or SUP board into the river, though little Leis Park on the Lawnton side, across from Sweeney Reserve is far more accommodating for river launching as its car park is right by the launching area.

Sweeney Reserve is equipped with a few BBQ facilities, so why not grill up a meal while the kids work up their appetite in the playground, basketball court, skate park, on the cricket pitch, or in the off-leash dog park.

A Nearby Cycling Adventure

It is worth mentioning the new Peninsula Line shared path from Petrie to Kippa-Ring can be accessed from Petrie Station, about 1km from Sweeney Reserve. If your family are cycling enthusiasts then perhaps a ride to Kippa-Ring is just what you’re after.

It’s a 12.6km cycle to Kippa-Ring Station, and another 4km ride approximately to Redcliffe Parade with its cafes, restaurants, shops and nearby beaches.

Lake Samsonvale

A short drive west of Strathpine you’ll find tranquil Lake Samsonvale. Although located right next door to busy Moreton Bay Region population hubs, it feels a whole world away. This picturesque lake is home to a broad variety of plant and animal species and makes for a great day out on and by the water.

Though swimming isn’t allowed, you can fish, boat and enjoy water sports (permits are essential), or stay dry BBQing on the shore, while the kids exert their energy in the playground.

Designated picnic areas can be found at Bullocky Rest, McGavin View, Forgan Park, Forgan Cove and Kobble Creek. For a family day out we recommend McGavin View for its sizable play structure, lookout and barbecue areas.

Bullocky Rest is also a great place to bring kids.

In addition to a small play structure, you’ll find opportunities to get up close and personal to waterbirds. Permits: Contact Samsonvale Water Sports Association or the Pine Rivers Fish Management Associationto obtain a permit.
