Looking for scary places in Brisbane?
Freak yourself and your friends out with self-guided Caboolture Historical Village ghost tours. There are 70 buildings dating back to over a century ago dotted around the site’s 4 hectares and 2 of these, in particular, may be home to ghostly residents – the Old Hospital and the Glenowen Homestead, also known as Bauer House.
The Old Hospital was originally a family home located on King Street Caboolture before being transformed into Riverview Private Hospital in 1920, remaining in operation until 1939.
There are no records available of the number of patients whose lives ended within its walls, but those who believe they’re more in-tune with the spirit world say they can feel the presence of ghosts within this ominous building.
The Caboolture Historical Village is featured in the ghost tours Brisbane north circuit and the Old Hospital is one of the buildings opened up for the evening of spirited adventuring.
The Caboolture Historical Village ghost tours guests were joined by the Village caretaker and her German Shephard. When the caretaker entered the old Hospital and walked through the passageway to the exit door, her faithful hound who had followed her every step of the tour so far, baulked, refusing to enter the creepy building, instead running around its exterior to meet her as she exited the other end.
Out of all 70 of the site’s buildings, the Old Hospital was the only one the dog feared to enter along with a number of tour guests who were too afraid to even walk up the wooden stairs onto the hospital’s veranda, as they said they could ‘feel’ the ghosts lurking within.
The Caboolture Historical Village Ghost Tours run at different times of the year, check the Village's Facebook page for updates on when the next spooky tour will pop up.
The beautiful old homestead at the northern end of the Village, referred to as either Glenowen Homestead or Bauer House, would likely have witnessed some deaths over the years.
One ghostly tale involves a security guard who was on duty during an annual Urban Music Festival event. The guard swears he heard a young lady enjoying a party inside the locked building as he was doing his rounds. As there were no living people in the homestead at the time, it is believed by some that the sounds of revelry he heard emanating from within were caused by a ghost who was enjoying the spirited liveliness of the music party from afar.
As many of the Caboolture Historical Village buildings boast lengthy histories, including the Old Morgue, Old Lockup and Workers Cottages, there may be many more ghostly stories which might reveal themselves one day (or night).
For a daytime jaunt enjoying a self-guided ghost and local history tour at your leisure, head over to the site during opening hours 9:00am to 4:00pm, or book a Caboolture Historical Village group guided tour for an in-depth exploration of the site’s most intriguing buildings.
