Samford Heritage Walk and Talk Tour

Samford Visitor Information Centre John Scott Park, Main Street, Samford Village QLD, Australia

Samford Village history walk and talk tour

Embark on a free, informative walk and talk tour through the charming Samford Village guided by one of the knowledgeable volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre.

This leisurely 30-minute stroll is perfect for all ages and abilities, whether you're exploring solo or with a group. Your knowledgeable local guide, Carolyne, will bring Samford's rich history to life as you meander along the Samford Village Heritage Trail.

Here are some of the historical gems you'll encounter:

  • Samford District Historical Museum: Delve into the fascinating past of Samford with a visit to this museum (open Sundays 10am-4pm).
  • John Scott Park: Relax amidst the tranquility of this park, a popular spot for locals and a great place to learn about the area's early settlers.
  • The Lilburne Centre (1918): Admire this grand building, originally a community hall and a vibrant social center in its prime.
  • Mews Lane: Discover a collection of horse-drawn carriages, offering a glimpse into Samford's transportation past.
  • Worker's Cottage: Step back in time and see a replica cottage showcasing the living conditions of Samford's early residents.
  • Main Street Shops: Browse through the unique shops lining the main street, many housed in heritage buildings that add to the village's character.

Camp Mountain railway crash site

While the train tracks themselves are no longer visible, Carolyne will also share the stories behind Queensland's worst ever train disaster, known as the Camp Mountain railway crash from 1947. This event is still the largest loss of life in a rail accident on the Queensland rail network with 16 fatalities including the driver and fireman on the train, and 38 were injured. This event not only shaped the village's development but also serves as a reminder of Samford's unique past.

After the tour, why not:

  • Explore the museum's exhibits in more detail (open Sundays 10am-4pm)
  • Treat yourself to a delicious morning tea at one of the many cafes lining the village streets
